Juergen Maier, Chief Executive, Siemens plc, will lend his backing to the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at this year’s EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), where he will take part in two panel discussions.

Participants will explore the relative decline in the number of young people studying and pursuing STEM careers, and how the empowerment and engagement of underrepresented groups could help create a wider base of scientists and engineers to foster Europe’s productivity, creativity and competitiveness.

Juergen Maier comments: “At Siemens, we’re passionate about inspiring young people to follow STEM career paths and help feed the skills pipeline. Our engagement programme, the ‘Curiosity Project’, helps bring STEM subjects to life in the UK. By supporting organisations that showcase STEM, and providing an extensive set of free, stimulating and unique STEM education resources, we aim to influence and inspire five million children to continue their STEM education and encourage them to consider science and engineering careers.

“We also work with educational awarding bodies and teachers to develop qualifications and teacher training, to help put STEM at the top of the UK education and skills agenda, particularly in terms of addressing the gender gap in STEM careers. Earlier this year we launched SeeWomen, a project that focuses on encouraging and fostering curiosity in young girls to think positively about their Siemens AG Press Release Reference number: ESOF – FINAL Page 2/2 potential in STEM careers, and to help challenge misconceptions about STEM subjects. “These initiatives are the embodiment of our ‘Ingenuity for life’ mission – to ensure what Siemens does has a lasting positive impact on society.” Mr Maier will also participate in a panel discussion on ‘Britain’s biggest experiment: the prospects for scientific collaboration post Brexit’ at 8.30am on 27 July. Following the vote to leave the EU, the UK government must now move swiftly to unify and agree the nature of the UK’s relationship with the EU and other trading partners, creating clear roadmaps to encourage future investment and access to projects such as Horizon 2020 – or a post-Brexit equivalent – to keep the UK at the forefront of international STEM research and development.”
